After a long, enjoyable summer, we are finally preparing for falling leaves, pumpkin spice lattes and woolly jumpers. Something else we will be met with is shorter days, which is why making the most out of the light we have access to is imperative for keeping a cosy home. But how can you light your home during winter?
Make the most of the natural light
As the days slowly shorten, bringing in natural light can be increasingly difficult. However, this doesn’t mean to say you can’t bring any natural light into your home. It helps to keep the curtains open for as long as possible to ensure the light lasts longer. It helps to place furniture with reflective surfaces, such as glass, metal or white colours, near the window.
Mirrors
Mirrors are another great way to reflect both natural and artificial light in your home. They’re perfect for doubling the brightness. For example, if you were to place a large mirror on the wall directly opposite your living room window, the light can bounce throughout, helping the space feel larger.
Be flexible
As the day changes, as will the direction and levels of light. This is where artificial lighting will come into play. It’s important to think about the function of each room and how you should layer the lighting accordingly. Here are our guides for some rooms in the home:
Task lighting is essential
Task lighting is perfect for those darker days where you need enough light to focus on a specific activity, whether it be cooking, reading, sewing, etc. Again, depending on the function of each room, there are various lighting options for whatever you need. For example, spotlights in the kitchen are ideal for food prep, but if you need a space to read, moveable lamps might be your best option.
Freshen up your lampshades
Speaking of lamps, it may be worth taking inventory of your lamps, chandeliers and pendants to check their quality. If they have become dull, yellow or outdated, you may wish to replace them with fresh white ones. They will look crisper and the room will appear brighter!
Pick the right temperature
Quality of light is another element that you should consider when keeping your home bright during the winter months. Fluorescent lighting can be too harsh, and cold tones are often unwelcoming. Warm tones are a much better choice, especially for unwinding at the end of a busy day. Warm lighting is also a wonderful way to boost your melatonin levels, which helps you relax before going to bed. So, when choosing the bulbs for your lighting, opt for a warm tone.
