Keep Warm While Reducing Energy over Winter

reduce energy costs in your home abm electrical wholesalers

It’s that wonderful time of year! The leaves are falling, our days are getting shorter and there’s a chill in the air. Some of you may have already reached for the thermostat, but what about those bills? Using energy doesn’t come cheap, and we can’t ignore the impact it has on our planet. There are many ways to keep warm while reducing energy over winter, from insulation to smart tech. Here are some tips to help you save both money and energy.

Insulate your home

With a well-insulated home comes significant savings in both energy and money. According to experts, approximately 25 per cent of heat within the home goes straight out of a roof that is not insulated properly. Insulating your roof, cavity walls and under your floorboards can lead to long-term savings for many years to come. Additionally, depending on the hot water system you are currently using, you may want to consider insulating your hot water tank and pipes.

Grants and loans are available to those who need help with the cost of insulation – visit gov.uk to find out more.

Turn your thermostat down

It’s been said numerous times that reducing your room temperature by merely 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent. The reason people say this is because it’s true! However, if you are over the age of 65 or heave a health condition such as heart or lung disease, it is recommended you keep your home to a minimum of 18°C.

You may also wish to reduce the thermostat on your hot water tank down to 60°C. Doing so will save on hot water as well as electricity as you will need less cold water to balance out the temperature.

Drop the pressure

Big fan of the power shower? You may be shocked to learn that they sometimes use more water than if you were to run a bath! And as such, this will also cost you a lot of money due to the amount of energy that is required to heat it. To save money, consider investing in a water-efficient showerhead.

Keep heating under control

By installing a room thermostat, timer and thermostatic radiator valves, you could save around £75 a year if used efficiently. This is according to the Energy Saving Trust. These will allow you to set the timer to heat your home before you wake up or get in from work. Individual thermostat valves on your radiators can also give you control over the number of rooms you wish to heat at any given time. Again, you can control the temperature too.

We would also recommend smart controls for your heating. They allow you to control your heating remotely via a mobile app, allowing you to set your heating while you’re not at home. ABM Electrical Wholesale can offer a wide range of smart options for your heating, so why not speak to a member of our team to find out more?

Other ways to keep the bills down this winter

Aside from the investing in new heating products or changing/controlling the heating products you already have, there are other things you can do to keep warm without relying too much on the heating. Here are a few examples:

  • Wrap up with blankets and use hot water bottles when the heating is off
  • Invest in heavy-duty curtains to keep the heat in
  • Look for any tiny gaps or drafts and fill them in
  • Place tin foil behind your radiators to reflect the heat
  • Leave the oven door open after cooking to let the heat flow through the room
  • Use rugs to insulate your rooms
